Fates and Furies

오바마가 읽었다는, 수 많은호평, 그리고 많은 상 후보에 오른, 화제작. 간만에 영문 소설을 읽고 싶어서 구입했었다. 후회하지는 않았지만, 사실, 힘들게 읽었다고 고백한다. 영어 가독성, 어휘의 수준이 상당하다. 아마 원어민들도 그렇게 쉽게 읽을 수 있을 것 같진 않다.한 커플의 (예술가다)사랑과 결혼생활에 대해서 두가지 관점에서, 즉남편 그리고 아내의, 써 내려간다. 정확히 절반으로 나뉘어지고 문체도, 스타일에도 변화를 주면서, 가슴아픈 사람의 관계와 사랑에 대한 긴 연대기를 써내려간다. 같은 시간대의 사건을 다른 시점으로 보여주는 소설을 항상 흥미롭다. 삶이란 결국 한 면으로만 판단 하기에는 너무나 복잡하니까.문장을 즐기는 것은 어려웠지만, 주인공들의 삶에 집중되기는 어렵지 않았다. 결국, 흥미로운 주인공들의 삶을 엿보는 것은, 언제나, 즐겁다. 어쩌면 시간이 흘러서 번역판을 읽게 될 지도 모르겠다.
